Job Description

What is the opportunity?

The Director, Pension Investment Risk and Operations will lead overall operations, risk assessment & monitoring, and related reporting activities pertaining to RBC’s Canadian Defined Benefit and Defined Contribution pension plan investments, including portfolio performance reporting & analysis and cash management.

The position will oversee investment risk in a portfolio context, inclusive of concentration, liquidity, leverage and market risks, and champion programs to enhance controls, monitoring and compliance with best practices for operational risk.  This individual will be directly involved in new initiatives, performance measurement and analytics, building and implementing risk policies and frameworks, as well as managing relationships with internal & external partners, peers, investment managers and other pension service providers.

The successful candidate will partner closely with various teams across the RBC, including the plan’s custodian, Human Resources, Legal, Tax, Finance, and execution agents within Corporate Treasury.

What will you do?

  • Lead a team responsible for measuring and reporting on portfolio risks, holdings, trade execution, and cash management
  • Lead total portfolio risk research and analytics, including market and liquidity stress testing
  • Lead analysis of emerging risks, participate in evaluation and implementation of portfolio strategy, and deep dive reviews into portfolio construction methodology
  • Ensure completion of quarterly performance and risk reports for the Investments Sub-Committee, Pension Plan Management Committee, and other governance bodies
  • Lead the relevant pension plans’ annual risk assessment processes, review and update key risk identification & controls, and ensure compliance with best practices for operational risk
  • Own the development, maintenance and implementation of new plan governance and operations policies, controls and processes including due diligence, operations, risk assessment, risk monitoring and related items
  • Collaborate with and oversee internal and external pension plan partners, suppliers, and service providers involved in investment operations, custody, and related processes

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Statistics, Mathematics or other field with complementary demonstrated investment experience
  • A professional designation in a relevant investment industry discipline, e.g. CFA, FRM, CAIA, FSA/ASA/CIA
  • 7+ years of experience in the investment industry, leading best practices
  • Experience with financial research and/or modeling in an institutional investment organization or similar environment.
  • Experience in writing, implementing and maintaining policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency with complex Excel spreadsheets is an essential skill.
  • Risk assessment and evaluation including stress testing, and liaison with internal risk oversight and model validation.
  • Knowledge of operational due diligence, performance and risk analysis.
  • Ability to lead and develop a team of high performing investment operations professionals.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with colleagues at different levels of the organization and a variety of external contacts.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy with the ability to identify and solve data and calculation errors.
  • Willingness and flexibility to examine and improve the current processes.
  • Ability work independently, identify and solve problems through conducting analysis supported by facts.

Nice-to-have 

  • Experience with Power BI and Python would be considered an asset.
  • Post graduate degree in Finance, Statistics, Mathematics or other field
  • ESG or sustainability certification, or equivalent experience in investment sustainability, including ESG integration.
