Job Description

What is the opportunity?

As a Vice President or Associate within the Toronto Institutional Client Credit Management Team;  you will manage a trading portfolio and facilitate transactions originated by the various trading businesses in Global Markets. The role will primarily support RBCCM's Commodities Group in the origination, onboarding, maintenance, and management of Commodity transactions and the relationships with clients of the Commodities Group including producers, processors and refiners, and commodity trading companies. The commodities business supports clients in the base and precious metals and energy industries with financing and derivatives products.

You will be partnering with various trading businesses in Global Markets to (i) identify and recommend suitable trading counterparties, (ii) facilitate the credit process, including evaluating and screening requests, preparing transaction requests and risk assessments, (iii) co-ordinate the trading documentation process, including structuring appropriate credit mitigation and (iv) optimize revenues.

What will you do?

  • Primarily support RBCCM's Commodities Group in the origination, onboarding, maintenance, and management of the credit relationship with clients of the Commodities Group including producers, processors and refiners, and commodity trading companies.
  • Engage with clients to conduct comprehensive due diligence, including collecting and reviewing relevant trading and lending documents such as Metals leasing, commodity derivatives elements of ISDA and related agreements, sale and repurchase agreements and other credit documentation, structure charts, and financials to support the credit evaluation process.
  • Collaborate with Commodity trading and structuring desks to support comprehensive client relationships by facilitating non-lending revenue opportunities.
  • Work with Group Risk Management in the risk assessment of Commodity clients and support credit onboarding through analysis of documentation and client information.
  • Focus on credit structuring in support of Global Markets trading relationships, including risk limits, regulatory, legal, compliance, tax, and operational matters.
  • Actively collaborate with Group Risk Management and the Trading Documentation Team in the document negotiation process by proposing ISDA credit terms (such as termination events, collateral agreements and other) and other credit provisions to ensure proper trading documents are established.
  • Prepare credit requests and trading line requests with related documentation required as part of Risk Management approval process and submit to relevant Business Heads for support.
  • Create call memos for credit Due Diligence meetings.
  • Work with and advise product partners on the optimal amount of trading credit required to meet our strategic objectives with each client relationship.
  • Work with internal stakeholders to address all counterparty credit concerns that may arise from the portfolio.
  • Occasionally support maintenance of accurate counterparty compliance reports and provide ad hoc reporting on utilization, performance, Due Diligence meetings, etc.
  • Understand and apply securities regulations governing the commodity trading and financing business.
  • Coach and guide junior professionals to ensure that employees understand RBC vision and support targeted behaviors that contribute to RBC goals and employee career development.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have:

  • Graduate Degree with focus in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics or other quantitative fields or similar.
  • Credit experience working within a financial institution or commercial company in a commodity or natural resources business.
  • Strong credit skills including financial analysis and industry analysis.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Understanding and knowledge of the commodity industry and/or the natural resources industry in at least one of base metals, precious metals, oil and gas, power or agricultural products
  • Strong understanding of trading products including derivatives.
  • Understanding of trading documentation.
  • Ability to establish priorities and manage tasks with accompanying attention to detail.
  • Strong analytic, problem solving and decision-making skills required.

Nice-to-have

  • In-depth knowledge of the commodities business including the role of commodity trading companies
  • A background in commodity trading or risk management
  • A CFA and/or MBA or similar.
  • Knowledgeable of the RBC global network and capabilities and understanding of and ability to interpret RBC credit processes, standing orders and credit policies.
  • Experience with and knowledge of the analytical approaches to credit risk assessment.

Pay Range

The expected pay range for this position is:

$115,000.00 - $165,000.00
