Opportunity
Investment Risk Management (IRM) is a department within the Risk Management division. IRM supports AIMCo’s investment decision-making processes by providing independent oversight and advisory of AIMCo’s investment risks at the total fund, client total portfolio, asset class, product and strategy levels.
This position within IRM will take a proactive approach to building strong analysis and advice that support the Public Equities and Tactical Asset Allocation investment strategy. This position reports to the Senior Risk Director, Public Equities & Tactical and can be based in Edmonton or Calgary.
The key to success in this role is to establish and cultivate successful partnerships with AIMCo’s Public Equities and Multi-Asset Portfolio Management teams. The Risk Manager will need to develop detailed analysis of public equity and tactical portfolios and conduct regular risk assessments on new deals and existing positions.
Responsibilities:
- Developing and maintaining relationships and ongoing dialogue with Public Equity and Multi-Asset Investment teams.
- Developing tools to facilitate portfolio risk monitoring and reporting that provides transparency into the risk profile of Public Equity and Tactical products and supports AIMCo in making risk-informed decisions.
- Performing risk assessments of new or revised strategies, products, and material transactions. This includes highlighting the total portfolio risk implications of public market initiatives and positioning.
- Advising on potential stress events or other emerging risks. Collaborating with portfolio managers and the broader Risk Management team to perform stress & scenario testing.
- Researching and recommending modeling improvements, in consultation with portfolio managers and the broader Risk Management team, to improve the risk measurement of Public Equity, Absolute Return (Internal market neutral strategies and external hedge funds) and tactical exposures within AIMCo’s portfolio.
- Assisting with building risk tools for the investment teams to aid in portfolio construction and design of new investment strategies. This may include the development of custom risk tools leveraging either existing vendor models or designing new models to understand potential future portfolio behaviour.
- Contributing to the development of organizational risk culture awareness. Designing risk management solutions that enable risk taking in a risk-controlled manner.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience relevant work experience as a global markets risk manager or portfolio manager, including exposure to multiple asset classes. Experience with multi-strategy hedge funds or multi-asset portfolios will be an advantage.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in a quantitative discipline (Finance, Economics, Financial Mathematics, Computer Science). Masters, Ph.D. or the completion of a relevant professional designation (e.g. CFA, PRM, FRM etc..) is a plus.
- Able to influence senior management and peers, comfortable speaking up and providing counterbalance, while simultaneously maintaining collaborative relationships.
- Initiative and the ability to grasp new concepts, driven and results oriented.
- Thorough with attention to detail and an ability to prioritize and organize.
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to AIMCo’s core values of excellence, transparency, humility, integrity, and collaboration, and inspires the same in others.
- Knowledge of the Barra risk models is considered an asset.
- Experience with portfolio construction is valuable.
Success Measures:
- Year one success will be achieved by developing strong partnerships as a respected advisor within the Public Equity, Multi-Asset Portfolio Management and Risk Management teams.
