The Opportunity:
We’re looking for an intern to join our credit risk team for a 4-month opportunity. The credit risk team supports Vancity by:
- Evaluating loan applications: Reviewing mortgages, personal loans, and business financing requests to assess borrowers’ financial strength and the level of risk involved.
- Monitoring the health of the loan portfolio: Analyzes trends in repayments, delinquencies, and economic conditions to identify emerging risks early.
- Setting and maintaining responsible lending standards: Develops credit policies and risk frameworks that ensure lending is prudent, fair, and aligned with regulatory requirements.
- Providing risk insights to leadership: Prepares reporting and analysis that support strategic decisions on growth, capital management, and long-term financial stability.
This role will report into credit risk strategy and systems manager while also supporting the entire credit risk leadership team.
A typical day would involve:
- Supporting data validation and migration work for commercial portfolios, gaining hands-on experience with how lending data is prepared for analysis, reporting, and risk assessment.
- Conducting market and industry research on credit risk trends and emerging risks, and helping summarize findings into short reports outlining potential impacts.
- Assisting with building and organizing a centralized database of reference materials to support the development of a Credit Center of Excellence.
- Helping analyze data and preparing reports and dashboards to support management reporting and insights on specific areas of interest.
- Using AI and analytical tools to assist in reviewing and improving internal policies and documents, focusing on clarity, consistency, and readability.
- Collaborating with teams across the organization to identify opportunities to improve processes, procedures, and documentation, gaining exposure to operational efficiency initiatives.
You'll learn:
- How commercial lending and credit risk data is collected, validated, and prepared for analysis and reporting in a real-world financial environment.
- Practical experience working with data during system and model transitions, and understanding why data quality matters.
- How market and industry research is conducted and translated into clear insights for decision-makers.
- Hands-on exposure to data analysis, reporting, and dashboard preparation for management reporting.
- How internal policies and procedures are reviewed, improved, and maintained, including responsible use of AI tools.
- How teams collaborate across an organization to improve processes and operational efficiency.
You have:
- Current enrollment or recent graduation from an undergraduate program within an applicable field and eligible for co-op/internship opportunities (i.e. business, finance, economics, data analytics, information systems)
- An interest in data analysis, research, and understanding how data supports business and risk decisions.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Comfort working with data in Excel or similar tools; experience with analytics or visualization tools is an asset but not required.
- Curious, motivated, and eager to learn in a professional environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly summarize findings.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with team members.
- A willingness to work in a highly flexible environment with multiple competing priorities.
What You’ll Earn:
This role offers a pay range of $27.85/hr.
